Fitzroy Island With Saasha Burns

Mother and Muse Saasha Burns on her recent trip to Far North Queensland.

Tell us about your recent trip to Far North Queensland, and the beautiful Fitzroy Island! It looked like an absolute dream.

"We were so excited to explore Far North Queensland with our ten month old son, Atlas. It was his very first time on a plane and he was such a star, sleeping most of the way. It was so surreal to be back at an airport again. We flew up to Cairns and stayed in Palm Cove, right on the palm tree lined beach. Our balcony looked out to the ocean and we watched the moon rise each night above the palms, listening to the sound of the waves. It was so calming to be so present in each small moment. Fitzroy Island is just 45 minutes away from Cairns by ferry, with tropical rainforest, coral beaches, and clear turquoise water. There’s a beautiful bush walk to Nudey Beach, where we spent the morning swimming with small fish and playing in the shallows with Atlas."

What are your favourite parts of travelling locally?

"The hospitality in Queensland is incredible, everyone is always so warm and welcoming. Far North Queensland is also a perfect holiday destination for families, with some of the greatest natural wonders of the world on our doorstep. There’s no jet lag and you don’t need to over plan your trip - just pack a few pairs of bathers and effortless pieces that can be worn day or night. Wake up early with the locals, spend time among nature, and enjoy the warm tropical weather from the moment you step off the plane."

How has travel changed for you this year?

"Our international travel plans were all put on hold this year with Covid, but we have been so grateful to spend quality time at home and see more of the northern rivers area. We’ve done a few little staycations in the area, trips up to Brisbane, and spent a few weeks traveling from Byron down to the Southern Tablelands, stopping at small coastal towns along the way, conscious to support as many small Australian businesses as we could."

Which parts of the world are you most excited to show Atlas?

"It would be a dream to return to the beautiful Amalfi Coast with him, where we were married. I can’t wait for Atlas to experience a different culture, language, landscape and history. I’m sure he will also love the pasta and endless gelato!"

What are the Australian destinations on your bucket list right now....

"One of my favourite quotes, by Christopher McCandless, is ‘the joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.’ We would love to pack just a few belongings in a van and travel around Australia for a period of time next year. We’ve never been to the Northern Territory, and we feel its such an important part of Australia for us to see, discover and learn more about, respecting the traditional custodians of the land and their stories. We’d love to live more slowly and mindfully, especially while Atlas is so young, discovering more of our great country together."

Three things you won’t travel without?

"Our film camera, reusable coffee cup, and I’ll always try and pack a special outfit for a nice lunch or dinner with Sammy and Atlas."
